( intervertebrals )

General Anatomy
This Crossroad is made of scores of small muscles collectively connecting the spine together in 1, 2, and 3 segment long pieces – as well as musculature connecting spine and shoulder blades.

The muscles powerfully attach into the sacrum bone of the pelvis, reaching up to the back of the skull, projecting into ribs and shoulder blades along the way.

When It’s Squishy
the intervertebrals give the spine amazing pipe cleaner-like mobility for reaching under the sink, screwing light bulbs overhead or spinning hula-hoops. Squishy intervertebrals maintain ideal curves in the spine for shock absorption and posture.

When Not Squishy
the intervertebrals turn into BACKFIRE. BACKFIRE locks the spine rigidly in place causing back pain. The pelvis locks as well. Upper body rotational movement is greatly compromised

Getting Backfire

Past Trauma –Your past does matter in your musculature as habits become formed so easily – past falls and sports injuries leave signature reflexes which have to be found and removed

Overuse Injury Active Overuse –Rapid Twisting and reining in of the spine ocurring from skiing over bumps, hiking down uneven terrain, or reaching for a misthrown Frisbee can set off Backfire in the intervertebral muscles

Passive Overuse –The intervertebral muscles work like mad to stabilize when we are doing over head work such as changing light bulbs or put things up and down on a high shelf

Repetitive Stress –Rhythmic motions such as walking, rowing and swimming can exhaust the small muscles of the spine

Disuse Injury –Again, sleeping and sitting are our biggest culprits. Of course everyone wakes up stiff in the morning as we “curl up and go to sleep” holding our Intervertebral spinal muscles in place for hours

Emotional State -Of course, the postures associated with the feelings of stress, insecurity, and anxiety heighten muscle tension all over – if you are stressed over a document you are writing, you build up a perfect Backfire storm.

Trauma Begets Trauma –Trauma leading to trauma is particularly evident with The Backfire as the Intervertebral family is collectively made of scores of small muscles, each one feeling more stress as another become immobilized
